Dean′s Message

Welcome to the website of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). CHSS is one of the four original Colleges of the University, distinguished by a rich tradition, a commitment to heritage and innovation, and a dedication to serve our community and the nation.

CHSS consists of 12 academic Departments offering a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs in humanities and social sciences. In CHSS we are committed to balancing breadth in the knowledge essential to be a fully educated citizen with depth with respect to career preparation. We believe this combination of breadth and depth of knowledge provides the necessary foundation of a world-class liberal arts education.

Our curriculum places a strong emphasis on critical, creative, and communicative skills, and on carefully preparing students to meet the intellectual and specialized challenges of their chosen careers. Our goal is to prepare our graduates to take their place as future leaders within their communities. To do so, we set high expectations for our students and provide the resources to help them meet these expectations. Across our programs, we apply the highest standards of excellence and we are sensitive to students' needs and their academic pursuits.

Our faculty members have respected national and international reputations in their respective fields of specializations and integrate scholarly research and creative work into their teaching. Our faculty and staff are student-centered and, as mentors, enjoy providing friendly, personal guidance to our students.
