About CHSS

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences was one of the initial colleges that constituted the United Arab Emirates University when it began operation in 1977. Over time it has expanded in the range of its programs, in student registrations, and in faculty and staff members.

Today, the College has about 150 faculty members and 38 staff members. It is organized in twelve academic departments. For planning and operational purposes, the departments are gathered in two divisions—the Social Sciences, and the Humanities—each led by an Associate Dean who reports to the Dean. The College offers seventeen undergraduate programs, a growing number of Masters programs, and a PhD program in all fields where there is sufficient academic strength.

In 2004, the University’s language of instruction was changed from Arabic to English. This caused a decline in the number of students . As most students were not well prepared in English, the University expanded its foundation program to assist them. Today, students coming to the University are aware of the requirement and are preparing themselves accordingly, so the level of English language competence among undergraduates is rising.

At the same time, the College adopted an interdisciplinary curriculum intended to strengthen the capacity of students for critical thinking and problem solving and an internship work experience  became mandatory. Subsequently the curriculum was modified to strengthen the ability of students to study in more than one discipline. Students may now take a Major, two Majors (if they meet certain requirements), or a Major and a Minor.
